For children, summertime means enjoying outdoor activities, indulging in additional screen time, and spending more time playing with friends. However, young children risk losing some of what they’ve learned and slowing their progress if they do not continue to practice the basics. A recent study of children in 3rd to 5th grades showed that students lost, on average, about 20 percent of their school-year gains in reading and 27 percent of their school-year gains in math during summer break.
All children face the “summer slide,” which affects their academic and social growth. Kids with disabilities need even more practice and repetition to maintain their skills. This program offers individualized programs for each child with developmental disabilities to help them practice what they’ve learned and develop new skills so they start the new school year prepared.
To monitor growth, teachers will create individual reading, math, communication, and social skills goals achievable in 6 weeks for each student and measure them from what was achieved on the first day compared to the last week of the program.
There will be a certified teacher for every three children. Children with Down syndrome have first priority, and children with other developmental disabilities i.e., autism, cerebral palsy, or severe language delay) will be enrolled if space allows.
Classes are held at Advance Behavior & Learning (140 Advance Point, Maitland) from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday – Friday for five weeks: June 14, 21, 28 and July 12 & 19
Subjects include reading, writing, math, and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) activities. Fun “summer camp” activities will supplement the learning time and include bounce houses, water days with slides, etc.
The maximum enrollment is 6 students entering 1st – 5th grade in August 2021.
The fee for the Summer Learning Academy is $300/week ($1,500 total) for the first six applicants with Down syndrome accepted into the program. A $500 down payment must be received with the application. This represents a $300/week scholarship ($1,500 total) from the DSACF Family Fund for DSACF Members only. If the fee presents a hardship for your family, please contact us at 407-478-5621. Additional scholarships will be offered as funding allows.
